Biography

“If music be the food of love… I tell you what – Shakespeare wasn’t kidding. I challenge you to find anything more universally understood and loved than music – especially when the voice is involved.”

It’s clear when speaking to Boyd Owen that he is in a word ‘passionate’ about music – especially the voice. If his audiences to date are anything to go by, Boyd is at the beginning of a very exciting career. His voice is a rich mixture of emotion, powerful lyricism, and strong musical intelligence.

2007 was started off with Opera in the Alps and the Market in Melbourne, Australia; quickly followed by an original Australian opera Una Cartolina da Carlton. In July, he returned to the USA for the Masterworks Performing Arts Festival in Indiana. There, he performed the role of Gaston in Verdi’s La Traviata, Kashchei in Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird, and made his international dramatic theatrical debut as John Proctor in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, working with renowned Hollywood acting coach, John Kirby, and film producer Ken Wales. Boyd has recently finished a new album, Songno.

Towards years end, Boyd will be returning to Australia to understudy the role of Ferrando in Victorian Opera’s production of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte.

Last year, Boyd was involved in 2006 Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony as part of an ensemble backing acts such as John Farnham, Ben Lee, Sarah Blasco and Dame Edna Everage. And in October, Boyd returned from performing in the USA; making his New York debut in the workshop for a new Broadway musical, Angels, and understudying Tito in a production of Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito at the Masterworks Performing Arts Festival in Indiana.

Other Australian credits include: Chosen as the 2006 Opera in the Alps 10th Anniversary Concert Scholar, Bamatabois and student Joly in Les Misérables; conducting a double bill of Peter Butler’s choral arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Mascangni’s opera Cavaleria Rusticana with the Diamond Valley Singers; Carols by Candlelight at Werribee Mansion as well as Christmas in the City carols at Federation Square, Melbourne. Performances with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic include Verdi's Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, Handel’s Messiah, Brahms’ Requiem and Mozart’s Requiem, Bach’s St. John Passion and Orff’s Carmina Burana. He has performed alongside artists such as David Hobson, James Morrison, Patti Greatz, and Marina Prior, under the direction of Tommy Tyco.

Boyd studied at the Melba Conservatorium of Music under a full scholarship and was also dux of first year. His vocal teacher is Peter Mander.

“God gave us each our very own, unique musical instrument – the voice. He gave me one – so I’ll keep singing till He takes it back!” – Boyd Owen
