Boyd Owen

“If music be the food of love… I tell you what – Shakespeare wasn’t kidding… I challenge you to find anything more universally understood and ‘loved’ than music – especially when the voice is involved. Show me a person who doesn’t enjoy music of some sort and I’ll show you they have no pulse.”

It’s clear when speaking to Boyd Owen that he is in a word ‘passionate’ about music and especially the voice. If his audiences to date are anything to go by, Boyd is at the beginning of a very exciting career. His voice is a rich mixture of emotion, powerful lyricism and strong musical intelligence. At a young age Boyd Owen has already amassed a considerable amount of experience as a performer in areas as diverse as music theatre, dance, drama, instrumental and classical performance - working with some of Australia and the world's top artists. A gifted pianist, vocalist and dancer, Boyd has also had considerable experience as a teacher, currently running his own studio – New Song.

2006 has proved another exciting, busy year for Boyd.  He recently returned from performing in the USA; making his New York debut in the workshop for a new Broadway musical called Angels and understudying Tito in a production of Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito at a music festival in Idiana. Towards the beginning of 2006 he was invloved with the 2006 Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony; as part of a small ensemble backing acts such as John Farnham, Ben Lee, Sarah Blasco and Dame Edna Everadge. Also, at the beginning of April, Boyd was on of eight grand finalist in the 2006 National Leiderfest Vocal Competion.

Following 2005 springtime scholars concert for Australian Music Events, Boyd was chosen, along with baritone Robert Clark, as 2006 Opera in the Alps 10th anniversary concert  scholar. Boyd also sang with Clark at Opera by the Lock in Mildura, again with David Hobson, Tommy Tyco and also Marina Prior.

Beginning with Opera in the Alps and Opera in the Market 2005; this year was one of continued study and a little time off following his tertiary studies. A highlight of the year was a trip to the Syndey Opera House in June to sing Verdi's Requiem, with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and the Stanford Symphony Orchestra. During October he performed in Loyola Musical Society’s production of Les Misérables as Bamatabois and student Joly. Following that he conducted a double bill of Peter Butler’s choral arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Mascangni’s opera Cavaleria Rusticana with the Diamond Valley Singers. During the Christmas season, he was the featured artist for Carols by Candlelight at Werribee Mansion as well as Christmas in the City carols at Federation Square, Melbourne.

Completing a Diploma of Music at the Melba Memorial Conservatorium of music in 2004, Boyd is a student of Peter Mander. He excelled in his studies at Melba. He was awarded Dux of 1st year in 2003, following his results of High Distinction for every saubject. He also recieved three years running the full fee Robert Salzer Scholarship.

Boyd’s theatrical pursuit began in early primary school and has continued to this day. He comes from a creatively gifted family, receiving his voice from an operatic grandmother. Boyd’s mother, Ruth, is a chief costumière with The Australian Ballet and his father, Peter, is a Presbyterian Church minister. He has four brothers: Xan is a luxury yatch builder, Josh is currently making noticeable waves in the Australian and international music industry with ‘The Josh Owen Band’. Reuben is heavily involved with his own DJ work, including prominent gigs, production and composition. Jonathan is currently at university studying linguistics and international relations.

Boyd has spent many years with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir; he has performed extensively as a first tenor in works such as Mahler’s 8th Symphony, Handel’s Messiah, Brahms’ and Mozart’s Requiems, Bach’s St John Passion and Orff’s Carmina Burana; under conductors such as Markus Stenz, Andrew Wailes and Peter Bandy. He has also taken part in recordings for Channel 7 with Mike Brady for events such as the football, rugby and the future Melbourne Commonwealth Games, and sang backing for Michael Falzon in the opening ceremony of the 2003 Davis Cup. Boyd has also been a choral scholar previous years of Opera in the Market, Vineyard and Alps, under the direction of Richard Divall and Richard Mills.

As a pianist Boyd is an experienced accompanist and performer. “God gave us each our very own, unique musical instrument – the voice. He gave me one – so I’ll keep singing till He takes it back!”
